Flash in the Can

I went to Flash in the Can 2008 in Amsterdam. Unfortunately I missed the first day since I was really sick. But the second day’s sessions where great, so that made it up.

I started the day with “Play with Pixels, Bitmap Manipulation with Flash” from Koen de Waggheleire. Very good session about using bitmap filters in Flash. He showed some cool stuff with ColorTransform, ColorMatrixFilter, ConvolutionFilter and DispacementMap. I am definitely going to try this out for myself.

After that I listened to Jared Tarbell about “The Circle”.A cool and inspiring session about such a simple shape. He showed some nice artwork of computer generated images of circles, like eyes.

I already had seen Andre Michelle on Flash on the Beach, but since that was so awesome I really wanted to see him again. The first 45 minutes where the same, unless this was a little more chaotic. Fortunately the last 15 minutes where really amazing. Andre is working on an online music application for making electronic music the same way as in a professional studio. He created some synthesizers, drumcomputers and filters in Flash. Really, really cool! Unfortunately by an update on the Flash player his project is a little broken. Hoping to get this fixed by Adobe he handed out T-Shirts with the text “Adobe Make some Noise” :-)

Then I went to Joshua Hirsch about Big Spaceship - Digital Creative Agency. A session about what they do and how they work. He showed some nice stuff they made. Really cool was the game for the movie “30 days of Night”.

The session of Ralph Hauwert was called “Flash 2D & 3D Effects”.  A very good session where Ralph showed us he can do a lot more that PaperVision3D. I showed his projects ‘Earthmine’ en ‘rePlex’ and talked about how to handle limitation. He used Escher and Pink Floyd as examples of artist who used there creativity to overcome limitation.Escher

He also talked about bump mapping and other complex 3D algorithms. For me this was the best session of FitC.

“The Rest of the Iceberg”of Hoss Gifford wasn’t as expected. He started chaotic and his Scotish accent is hard to follow.

The last session of today was “Beyond the Knowledge: The Art of Playing”of Erik Natzke. Although I had already seen this session on Flash on the Beach, it is still amazing was this guy does. I think he is one of the most brilliant Flash Designers and Developers. Hard to describe what he does, you should really check him out.

Nice to read your report! I went to some different sessions, most of which turned out to be great too. So much creativity in a few days is very inspiring!

    Hey Thijs,
